Q: How do we Green your goods?
A: We plant trees - lots of them - to offset the emissions of greenhouse gases from the supply chain and manufacture of your goods. It's not an optional extra for you, we've taken care of it already. We've just completed our first year of trading (end of January) and we can report that we planted 1069 trees as a consequence of that business. Details of the location can be found below.
Trade is a good thing - it creates wealth by allowing things to be manufactured in the cheapest locations - but there are side effects (what economists called externalities of production - it's not called the dismal science for nothing). Side effects of modern-day international trade can include pollution from transportation of goods, and the differential pollution caused when goods are manufactured in places where the energy consumed is less clean (but cheaper). At Greened House we recognise that consumers are generally unhappy about all of this, but that on the whole they lack the time or ability to do anything about it. We've decided to take care of this stuff for you when you buy our goods - and we're paying. You'll find our prices competitive, but there's no additional charge for making a contribution to the environment.
We've estimated the greenhouse gas emissions caused by our goods - not very scientifically, but we've overestimated, and we'll plant trees that capture much more than the equivalent amount of CO2 over their lifetimes. Working with partners FOREST CARBON, who have created environment enhancing native woodlands for Marks & Spencer, The Green Insurance Company, Hallmark and Stagecoach amongst others, we are planting our own woodland in Scotland. These trees aren't already there, they are only getting planted because of our business and your purchases. As our sales rise we will plant more trees. The forests we plant are permanent, native broadleaf forests in the UK - replacing what was there centuries ago. They will never be felled for commercial purposes.
We've started with planting at Crairieknowe, in Dumfries and Galloway, and we'll keep you up to date with all of our woodlands as we go along.
